Ski season is open! Where to enjoy the snow!

This year, winter started particularly early. We are only in November and some ski resorts already open very soon. What a big chance for all skiers, snowboarders or winter lovers in general. The Pyrenees are not far away from Toulouse, easily accessible by car, train or bus. Here are the opening dates for ski resorts in the Pyrennes (by opening day).

Selection of French ski resorts in the Pyrenees

The closest resort from Toulouse that is great to have a good day out on the slopes, is probably Ax-les-Thermes. Just about 1.5h from Toulouse, it has great slopes for all levels and some great off-piste skiing as well.

You can either park in the town of Ax-les-Thermes and take the gondola up or park at the resort itself, just follow the signs to Ax-les-Thermes station.

This resort is a bit further than Ax (almost 2h), but it is also a good size to ski for a day. The resort goes up to 2400m, so you normally get quite a lot of  snow. The great thing about Peyragudes is that you can go skiing for the day and enjoy some thermal baths in the evening at the Balnéa centre, a great thermal bath with different atmospheres and areas. A great way to relax after a day of skiing.

Piau Engaly

Follow their Instagram account. They do a great job in showing you their resort and the different type of events they are hosting. Piau also belongs to the n’py network, that offers great prices with the n’py membership card. From the opening to the 20th December, the n’py network offers 30% on ski passes. All info here.

Grand Tourmalet (La Mongie/Barèges)

With over 100km of pistes and 2,500m of altitude, La Mongie is a great resort. It’s about 2h15 from Toulouse, so a bit further again, but honestly, it’s great for a day out. The landscape is really pretty with a view on the Pic du Midi.

Pic du Midi, for a special experience

For a special experience you can ski down Pic du Midi and enjoy an amazing view up there. I have only been in summer (see my blog article here), but apparently it is a great experience. Try it out!

Selection of Spanish ski resorts in the Pyrenees

Baqueira/Beret is just my absolute favourite ski resort in the Pyrenees. It’s a bit far for just a day, because it is in the Spanish Pyrénées, but for a two-day trip it is great. The resort is big enough to have two great days of skiing, without being bored. Believe me you will not be disappointed.

You can either stay overnight in Baqueira itself or stay in one of the villages on the way between Vielha and Baqueira. Veilha It’s only 10min drive from the Baqueira gondola and you will find great restaurants, bars, shops and hotels (all at different prices).

The resort itself has 152km of slopes and you will have a great time skiing there for two days. There are also a lot of restaurants on the pistes, in case you want to stop for lunch during the day. So put your skis on!

La Molina

La Molina is the oldest ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. It’s quite a big resorts where you can easily ski two full days and for those who love some adventure and fun on their snowboards, they have the biggest superpipe in the Pyrenees. If you like skiing when everyone else already has some drinks, you can even ski in the evenings on some days. And to finish the day, there is a great Après-Ski bar at the bottom of the slope.

Selection of ski resorts in Andorra

Grandvalira is the closest and the largest of the two ski resorts in Andorra. And the advantage of skiing in Andorra, you can do you tax free shopping after skiing. Normally these two resorts in Andorra always have snow the longest, as they are quite high up. They even host the FIS World Cup Final this year, and that means something.

Vallnord is a bit further than Grandvalira, but also offers great skiing. It is smaller though, so don’t expect the huge resort.

By train

You can get to several ski resorts by train from Toulouse, some even offer skirail tickets incl. train and ski passes.

  • Luchon-Superbagnères
  • Font-Romeu
  • Peyragudes
  • Piau-Engaly
  • Le Grand Tourmalet

By bus

Duclos offers transport to the major French ski resorts, like Peyragudes, Ax-les-Thermes or Saint Lary.

Price: from 18€ per person

Négoti voyage

Négoti offers transport to the following ski resorts:

· Ax 3 Domaines > Resort (leaves you directly at the resort)
· Luchon Superbagnères > Luchon village (as close as possible to the gondola)
· Peyragudes > Resort (bottom of slopes)
· Saint Lary Soulan > Village (as close as possible to the new gondola next to the thermes)

Price: €35-42

Ski’zy goes from Colomiers over Toulouse to Peyragudes. For €38 (€30 in December) you can go to Peyragudes, enjoy a day on the slopes and have a hot drink on the bus. On the way back, the bus leaves at 4.30pm in Peyragudes.

Plateau de Beille

There are four different routes you can take with different levels. For 7€ per adult, you can have a fun day enjoying the beautiful landscape around the Plateau de Beille. Snowshoes can also be rented on the spot.

If you want to book a guided tour, there are great options for different levels on this website.

Cross country skiing.png

Beret (close to Baqueira)

Nordic skiing is great in Baqueira/Beret. There is a circular route about 7km of slopes in Beret and another 40km around Orri.

Other great cross-country and skating can be found on this list.

La Mongie

La Mongie has great snowmobile tours to offer. The tour up the Col du Tourmalet that is about 1h is a great tour. Snowmobile is not the cheapest winter sport, but you get to amazing locations in a short time.

A special thing to do is to go up to the restaurant L’Etape du Berger with the snowmobile and have a dinner with a view there. You can go up there on Wednesday and Saturday night and book directly on their website.

Saint-Lary is also a great place for snowmobiling. You can either do it during the day or after your day of skiing.

pecial thing to do is to go up to the restaurant L’Etape du Berger with the snowmobile and have a dinner with a view there. You can go up there on Wednesday and Saturday night and book directly on their website.

Dog sledding.png

Dog sledding (chiens de traineaux) is a nice way to discover the mountains, especially if you are not into skiing and skating.

Peyragues (10min away)

SHERPA has 40 dogs and well located 10min from Peyragudes. So if you have friends and family skiing while you want to try something else, dog sledding is really a great things to do.

Lac de Payolle

At the beautiful Lac de Payolle, you can go for a great tour with Huskies. The lake is great in summer and winter. So why not going on a dog sledding tour? Have a look at this great video from Attelage Altitude.

This page offers different sports activities in winter and summer in the Pyrenees and is completely in English.

There are of course many more great options in the Pyrénées! But most importantly, enjoy your winter and have fun! There is so much to discover!
